Glover takes US Open title

Lucas Glover was crowned US Open champion on Monday, coming out on top after holding off thrilling final round assaults by Phil Mickelson and David Duval.

Glover eventually did enough to win the tournament by two strokes, leaving Duval and Mickelson tied for second alongside overnight co-leader, Ricky Barnes.

Barnes’s meltdown was nothing short of spectacular, as he bogeyed the first 7 holes, effectively snatching defeat from the jaws of victory. Barnes’ capitulation left Glover simply needing to protect his lead, and when both Duval and Mickelson bogeyed the 17th, Glover had the title in the bag.

“That was huge,” Glover said after taking the title. “I heard some roars ahead of us, so I was aware of what was going on. To get that in there close and sneak it in was pretty big momentum.”

Tiger Woods put in another indifferent performance on the final day of play, and eventually had to settle for a tied sixth place.

“It was as good as I hit it all week, and to miss that many putts is pretty frustrating,” Woods told reporters. “I gave myself so many chances and I just made nothing.”
