Phil Mickelson was born on June 16, 1970, in San Diego, California. San Diego is also the venue for the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines. Mickelson was nicknamed “Lefty” because of his left-handed swing, which is something of an oddity because he is usually right-handed. In 2006 he again won The Masters, this time by two strokes over South African Tim Clark. Mickelson has also enjoyed a number of second place positions - at the 1999 US Open, the 2001 PGA Championship, and then again at the 2002, 2004 and 2006 US Opens.
