Retief Goosen: 2008 US Open Player
Affectionately known as 'The Goose', Retief Goosen is one of the most successful golfers to ever have come out of South Africa. He has been among the top ten golfers in the world for a number of years. He was born on February 3, 1969, in Pietersburg, South Africa, and currently has residences in Polokwane in South Africa, Berkshire in England and Orlando in the United States. Retief Goosen became a professional golfer in 1990, and joined the European Tour in 1993 and the PGA Tour in 2001. In 2001 and 2004, Retief Goosen was the US Open winner.
Retief Goosen, 2008 US Open player, has won on the international circuit every year since 1995. From the period 2001 to 2005 he won a PGA Tour event every year. In 2006 he was ranked the third best golfer in the world.
Retief Goosen's most significant finishes
Retief Goosen has enjoyed a host of professional wins: six on the PGA Tour, 14 on the European Tour and 12 others including nine on the Sunshine Tour.
His best results in major championships were his second place in the 2002 and 2007 Masters tournament, his 5th place in the 2005 British Open and his 6th place in the 2005 PGA Championship. These were, of course, largely eclipsed by his great wins in the 2001 and 2004 US Opens.
Retief Goosen was a European Tour Order of Merit winner in 2001 and 2002.
Retief Goosen at the US Open
'The Goose' enjoyed victory at the US Open in 2001 at Southern Hills and in 2004 at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, and had a great chance at victory again in 2005 but slipped badly to 11th place after the final round. In 2002, perhaps feeling the pressure as a result of his previous year's win, Retief Goosen missed the cut for the US Open. He also missed the cut at the 2006 and 2007 US Open. But he should never be ruled out of contention for the 2008 US Open - anyone who has won the US Open twice in the past is capable of staging a comeback.
